They require some sophistocated mathematical skills, but are exceptionally powerful in that they are capable of relating market and industry data, over time, into the process to quantify the integrity of the process. Another recommendation would be to develop an algorithmic model of the process, and use computability theory to analyze it, (you will probably be amazed at what you find-there are processes, which although incredibly simple, require disproportionately more resources as the complexity of the environment increases.)
